The programme is intensive and the pressure to meet deadlines is real. You need to be committed but the programme is also good fun. You will meet lots of like-minded people who could be good contacts in the future.
The programme comprises: news reporting, public affairs, press law and shorthand with options to study sport, video journalism, subbing or the business of magazines. It is examination and portfolio based to help prepare you for the pressures of a newsroom, where you will be asked to draw on knowledge of press law and public affairs at a moment’s notice and be able to produce concise and accurate stories to meet deadlines.
This is largely a practical programme, aiming to provide you with professional skills and techniques enabling you to obtain a position on a wide range of publications such as business, technical and consumer magazines or to freelance giving you the opportunity to work across a range of titles.
The programme is based on producing news and feature articles, taking an initial idea and developing it through to a fully designed page. You will then compile your portfolio for assessment. You can choose the subject of some of your articles, which gives you the opportunity to concentrate on a specific subject area or readership or develop your interests in several different areas and in writing for a variety of target audiences.
Producing these articles will involve: Gathering information by interviewing people, attending events such as press launches, exhibitions and carrying out research. Sub-editing, which is being able to take a piece of work, assess and improve it and includes rewriting, proof reading, writing headlines, standfirsts and captions and manipulating layouts. Page design and layout on AppleMac using Indesign and Photoshop, which are the standard packages used in industry. Being aware of legal and ethical issues that may affect your work.
