About the course

The Level 4 qualifications in Principles of Leadership and Management are designed for aspiring middle managers and first line managers to develop personal management capabilities and grow professional management skills including decision-making, managing team dynamics and delegation capability.

Entry requirements

Minimum level 2 or equivalent in maths and English. You must be working at a junior manager level as a minimum for at least 12 months.

All applicants are required to submit a 500 piece typed document and attend an interview prior to being offered a place on the course.

Learners over 19 years old can access a government Advanced Learning Loan for some of the programmes. This becomes repayable once earnings rise above £21,000 p.a. (at extremely low interest rates). Learners over 18 who are under 24 can access co-funding and may be eligible to pay only half of the quoted prices. Some organisations who are paying fees for their employees may be able to access European funding streams.

Who is it suitable for?

This course is suitable to anyone aged over 19 years old and you must currently work within the junior manager’s role for at least 12 months.

Why study?

The UK currently lags behind its G7 competitors’ average productivity levels by an average of 18%. Poor management is estimated to cost the UK £84bn in lost productivity per year. Closing the productivity gap means recognising the pivotal role of management and leadership skills in improving productivity and a national focus on replacing ‘accidental managers’ with confident, competent, qualified managers. This course provides you with the opportunity to develop and enhance your management skills. Through studying and applying theoretical frameworks around the field of management you will be apply your learning in a practical approach, allowing you to become more competent and confident as a manager.

Where will this course take me?

On successful completion of a Level 4 qualification in Principles of Leadership and Management a number of progression opportunities become available:

  • Progress to other qualifications at the same level (e.g. from Level 4 certificate to Level 4 diploma etc.)
  • Progress to other qualifications at the next level (e.g. from Level 4 Certificate to Level 5 or 6 Certificate)
  • Higher or degree apprenticeship

Core modules

The qualification is made up of a mixture of units that will be completed dependent on the level that you undertake, these include:

  • Understanding the management role
  • Planning and leading a complex team activity
  • Developing your leadership style
  • Understanding good practice in workplace coaching
  • Motivating people in the workplace
  • Managing personal development
  • Managing and implementing change in the workplace
  • Understanding and developing relationships in the workplace.

How will I be assessed?

Assessment methods include word constrained written assignment, presentations and professional discussions.

You will complete between 4 and 8 units dependent on the level to which you are studying. Each unit will require a piece of work to be submitted and all deadlines will be provided during the induction.

In addition to attending weekly evening classes all you will be expected to complete independent study outside of the classroom. This varies from week to week but could include set readings, research or gathering information from within the workplace.

You will receive one-to-one support from your tutor through email, telephone and face-to-face meetings. You will be expected to attend tutorial sessions with your tutor during the course.

Will I have to provide anything?

You will need to bring your own mobile device that can connect to the College WiFi e.g. tablet, smartphone etc.
