About the course

Talented engineers, technicians and managers are vital to the future success of the engineering and aeronautical industries. This course will give you a solid knowledge base as well as supporting you to develop essential hand skills that will enable you to progress into roles such as an aircraft maintenance technician or aircraft fitter. You could also progress to an apprenticeship or onto a higher level of study.

Entry requirements

5 GCSEs grades 4-9 including maths at grade 5 or better and English. Interview and reference.

How much does it cost?

Free to those aged 16-18. If you are aged 19+ you can apply for an Advanced Learner Loan.

There is a range of financial support that you may be entitled to, including: Learner Support funds, grants and bursaries and employer support.

Additional course costs of approx. £100 a year will apply. This will cover the cost of educational visits, textbooks, guest speakers etc.

All enrolled students at Stansted Airport College will be eligible to lease an Apple device to enable them to learn where and when they want. All students will are expected to have use of an iPad for their learning, in the majority of cases through a lease-to-buy scheme.

The Aeronautical industry offers many exciting career opportunities and we provide clear pathways to a successful career. The possibilities are vast and with further study and experience you could be earning in excess of 60K a year as an Aviation Safety Certification Engineer, an Aerospace Engineer, Aircraft Fitter, Aircraft Maintenance Technician and many more.

We currently work closely with a number of companies to ensure learners are developing the skills they require to successfully progress into work with a reputable business. Watch out for guest speakers, behind the scenes tours, work experience and apprenticeship opportunities with top companies such as, Manchester Airport Group, Harrods Aviation, Ryanair, Kearsley Airways, AEM ltd and many more.

Where will this course take me?

You can progress to a higher apprenticeship to train as a licensed aircraft engineer, progress on to our HNC/HND programmes or even onto university to study a degree programme. You could also move into employment as a trainee engineering technician or even move into the UK armed forces to train as an aircraft systems technician.

Core modules

The course consists of 8 Mandatory Units and up to 10 Optional Units. These include:

  • Engineering Principles
  • Aircraft Flight Principles and Practice
  • A Specialist Engineering Project
  • Microcontroller Systems for Engineers
  • Calculus to Solve Engineering Problems
  • Electronic Devices and Circuits
  • Aircraft first line Maintenance Operations
  • Airframe Mechanical Systems
  • Aircraft Electrical and Instrument Systems

Engagement with Employers is a mandatory element of this qualification. A minimum of 30hours work experience is required as part of this programme.

How will I be assessed?

Assessment methods include a combination of examinations, portfolio of evidence and written assignments.

This qualification is graded Fail/Pass/Merit/Distinction/Distinction
