The 16 to 19 tuition fund is ring-fenced funding for schools, colleges and all other 16 to 19 institutions who receive annual funding allocations from ESFA for the provision of 16 to 19 education, to mitigate the disruption to learning arising from coronavirus (COVID-19).

The funding will be used to provide small group tuition for learners aged 16 to 19 who have not yet achieved a grade 6 in English and/or maths. The provision will not be limited to tuition for English and maths but will also be used to help progressing learners on vocational courses where assessment may have been deferred because of lockdown.

Tuition groups will comprise of small groups, and the tuition sessions will be scheduled in addition to the planned programme of study hours already timetabled for the academic year 2022/23.   

Catch-up support sessions will be prioritised for those learners:

• who have not achieved a grade 4 in English and/or maths
• with an Education, Health and Care (EHC) Plan
• with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), particularly where they have experienced additional disruption to learning as a result of their specific needs and disabilities
• students from the most economically deprived areas of the country based on the index of multiple deprivation

Tuition Support offered will be based on learners’ individual needs and those who will benefit most from small group tuition. These sessions will be delivered as below:

• small groups of up to 5 students, however in exceptional circumstances this may be extended to up to 7 students as outlined in the conditions below:

1. where workshop space is at a premium
2. if the absence of a member of staff requires the merger of 2 existing groups on a temporary basis
3. where a specialist staff member has limited availability
