About Finding an Employer

You MUST have an employer before you can start an apprenticeship. You can search for an apprenticeship job here.

If you don't yet have an employer you can still apply for an apprenticeship while you continue to look. We can offer you advice on how to successfully secure an apprenticeship with an employer.


2 to 4 years


Starting from 31 January 2021

You will learn to design and plan, select and install, commission and maintain plumbing and heating systems. Working as part of a team and managing workflow and projects skilfully, as well as dealing with customers is a vital part of the learning process. You will develop knowledge, skills and behaviours supporting accuracy, marking-out, cutting and bending skills, along with jointing in metal and plastic. Appliances and equipment covered include gas, oil and solid fuel boilers, pumps, bathroom furniture, control systems and aspects of above ground drainage and water supply. New technology including solar, thermal biomass and water recycling are also covered. 

What does the course involve?

Plumbing and Domestic Heating Technicians plan, select, install, service, commission and maintain all aspects of plumbing and heating systems. Plumbing and domestic heating technicians can find themselves working inside or outside a property.

This apprenticeship is designed to provide you with the opportunity to develop the knowledge, skills and core behaviours expected of a competent Plumbing and Domestic Heating Technician operating in a number of regulated areas.

Our programme is delivered on a day release basis.

An apprenticeship comprises two parts:

  • Typically 20% study element (at Harlow College or Stansted Airport College).
  • 80% work based element with an employer. It is your responsibility to find an employer.
