We want to prepare you with the best construction and building skills so you can begin a career in this highly valued profession. The construction skills learnt throughout your time at Harlow College can be easily transferred throughout the region, country or the world and will enable you to work with many industry-leading employers.

Bench Joinery Apprenticeship

Joiners make and install wooden fixtures and fittings. They can work in many areas, for instance on construction sites, fitting out shops and bars, and building sets for film and TV. If you enjoy working with wood and want to put your practical skills to good use, this could be an ideal career for you. You'll need an eye for detail, good maths skills for working out measurements and the ability to follow technical plans.

Brickwork Apprenticeship

Bricklayers build and repair walls, chimney stacks, tunnel linings and decorative stonework. They might also refurbish brickwork and masonry on restoration projects. If you enjoy doing practical things and you are interested in construction, this could be the perfect job for you. To become a bricklayer, you will need to be able to read plans. You’ll also need to be able to work in a well organised way.

Brickwork Diploma (EWPA)

If you're are an experienced, time-served bricklayer but have no confirming qualifications, this course is a quick route to NVQ level 2. It will also help you get the right CSCS card.

Brickwork Level 1 Diploma

This is a practical bricklaying course in which we embed as much knowledge as possible into the practical tasks you undertake. This minimises the amount of time spent in the classroom. We use a range of delivery methods, with a large proportion of E-Learning done through iPads and other learning technologies.

Brickwork Level 2 Diploma

Bricklayers develop skills that can be used worldwide. In the UK, efficient and qualified bricklayers will typically earn between £100 - £150 per day. The Level 2 Diploma will enable you to develop and hone your skills in the craft of bricklaying and will enable you to experience all aspects of the craft. You will also gain a greater understanding of the construction environment.

Building Services (Plumbing & Electrical) Level 1

Learn the fundamental skills and knowledge common to all building services practices. Includes health and safety requirements and the communication of building services information. It offers an extensive choice and flexibility for you to demonstrate your competence in a broad variety of building services activities.

Building Services (Plumbing & Electrical) Level 2

The qualification covers many areas within Electro technical technology, units such as principles of electrical science, electrical installations technology and health and safety within Building Services industry. It offers an extensive choice and flexibility for learners to demonstrate competence in one or more of a broad variety of building services activities.

Carpentry & Joinery Diploma

This is a practical carpentry course where we embed as much of the knowledge as possible into the hands-on tasks. This minimises the amount of time spent in the classroom. Construction & the Built Environment

This is your pathway to a professional career in the booming construction industry. There's a national skills shortage in construction, so salaries are high and there are plenty of opportunities. The course is aimed at those who aspire to a well paid future in Civil Engineering, Site Management, Surveying or many other professional roles. You'll gain an insight into the construction industry, from the planning stage through to the design and building of housing, industrial and commercial buildings. We've made a huge investment in state-of-the-art technology, so you'll be working with cutting edge equipment. We also have great links with employers in the industry.

Electrical Installation Apprenticeship

This Apprenticeship will provide you with the skills and experience to work competently in the electrical industry whilst working towards the industry standard qualification. You'll work under the close supervision of an experienced employer, learning all aspects of the job while maintaining effective working relationships with other trades and customers.

Electrical Installations (2365-02)

This programme is a practical, work-related course. You will learn by completing projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations. It covers the basic underpinning knowledge and technical practical skills needed to be an Electrician. The programme provides a good foundation for future careers opportunities or progression on to a more advanced work-related qualification.

Electrical Installations – Buildings & Structures (2365-03)

This is as a practical, work-related course. You learn by completing projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations. It covers the basic underpinning knowledge and technical practical skills needed to be an Electrician. The programme provides a good foundation for future careers opportunities or progression on to a more advanced work-related qualification.

Electrical Maintenance Apprenticeship

This Apprenticeship will provide you with the skills and experience to work competently in the electrical industry whilst working towards the industry standard qualification. Future Home Design & Construction Higher National Certificate & Diploma

The Higher National Certificate in Future Home Design & Construction (MOBIE) will enable graduates to demonstrate a sound knowledge of new and emerging technologies and innovative strategies within the construction and built environment.

George Clarke (pictured above) is the founder of MOBIE (Ministry of Building, Innovation and Education) as well as being a well-known TV presenter and architect. MOBIE have had a significant input into the design of the course, drawing on their experiences of creating innovative and unique living spaces, with an emphasis on designs for homes of the future.

The ethos of MOBIE is about thinking differently. As George Clarke said: “Most houses are built in a fairly conventional way and MOBIE’s been set up to do something different to that.”

The course aims to address the need for significant skills within traditional and more mainstream disciplines such as building surveying, quantity surveying and construction management – which are crucial to enabling the vast majority of construction projects for the foreseeable future.

Plumbing & Heating Apprenticeship

As a plumber, you could find yourself working in many different places – from construction sites to residential homes. Job prospects are good, with plenty of scope for self-employment. As a plumbing apprentice, you'll learn about the installation and maintenance of plumbing systems and components. You be working under minimal supervision to complete the installation and maintenance of domestic hot water, cold water, sanitation, drainage, rainwater systems, central heating systems and components.

Property Maintenance Operative Apprenticeship

If you're keen to earn money whilst you train to become a fully qualified tradesperson then an apprenticeship may be for you. A Property Maintenance Operative apprenticeship will equip you with the necessary experience and training required for you to progress in your career. You'll work closely with an experienced employer while in the workplace and learn from our hugely experienced team of tutors at the College. You'll not only become a qualified property maintenance operative, you'll also learn all aspects of working in industry.

Site Carpentry Apprenticeship

Site carpentry is a skilled trade, creating and installing building components using timber products. Site Carpenters normally work on a building site or in domestic and commercial premises, preparing and fixing building components, from the initial erection of a new building, through to the installation of all necessary fixtures and fittings, as well as a range of repair and maintenance activities. Advanced site carpentry involves carrying out skilled tasks on a construction site or in a workshop, creating and installing building components. The advanced carpenter and joiner is able to undertake complex job tasks, requiring high levels of practical skills and knowledge, in addition to managing their own work and leading small teams.

Site Carpentry Diploma

This level 2 programme will enable you to develop and hone your skills in site carpentry and will enable you to experience all aspects of the craft both on and off the job. Upon successful completion of your course you will hold all qualifications to the expected industrial standard. You will also gain the opportunity to progress onto an advanced apprenticeship in site carpentry.
