    About the course

    This course will give you extensive knowledge of the development of babies and young children. You will gain an understanding of the stages and sequences of brain development, physical development and social skills. Most significantly, you will gain professional status enabling you to work with children or progress to university for an Early Years Degree,Teaching Degree or a Degree in Childhood Studies. The course can also lead to an alternative career in areas such as nursery or primary school teacher or childminder.

    Entry requirements

    5 GCSEs grades 4 -9 including English and Maths.
    DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) clearance).

    How much does it cost?

    Free to those aged 16-18. If you are aged 19+ you can apply for an Advanced Learner Loan.

    There is a range of financial support that you may be entitled to, including: Learner Support funds, grants and bursaries and employer support.

    £50 DBS check, £20 resources, £12 uniform, £20 textbook, £100 trips. Travel costs to and from placements.

    Who is it suitable for?

    Those who aspire to work with children in a nursery or primary school as a childminder or nanny. Those who want to be primary school teachers, teaching assistants or work with children in an educational setting.

    Why study?

    You will complete a long term observation of a child on placement, noting their growth & development. You will prepare a nursery environment, both indoor and outdoor on placement. You will also prepare a child friendly environment within the College's 'Stay & Play' facility.
    You will cook some healthy meals within both the kitchen and on your placement and you will lead play activities and learn First Aid.

    Where will this course take me?

    Higher education on the 2 year Foundation Degree in Early Years, Playwork and Education at University Centre Harlow. Employment as a primary school teacher or nursery teacher.
