About the course

This course is focused on developing a broad range of skills used in the hospitality industry. In our skills kitchens you will develop your practical skills using a variety of foods and equipment. Away from the kitchen you will also gain an excellent understanding of delivering outstanding service. You will benefit from our excellent links with highly reputable businesses and industry experts.

Entry requirements

4 GCSEs at grades 2-3 (previously Grade D-E). Interview and reference.

How much does it cost?

Free to those aged 16-18. If you are aged 19+ you can apply for an Advanced Learner Loan.

There is a range of financial support that you may be entitled to, including: Learner Support funds, grants and bursaries and employer support.

Additional course costs of approx. £100 a year will apply. This will cover the cost of educational visits, textbooks, guest speakers etc.

All enrolled students at Stansted Airport College will be eligible to lease an apple device to enable them to learn where and when they want. All students will are expected to have use of an IPad for their learning, in the majority of cases through a lease-to-buy scheme.

Why study?

The Hospitality industry is the biggest employer in the UK, accounting for 4.5 million people. The Hospitality and catering industry covers work in restaurants, hotels, and cafés & with contract food preparation companies that supply food and drink to other industries such as the aviation industry.  

We currently work closely with a number of companies to ensure learners are developing the skills they require to successfully progress into work with a reputable business. Watch out for guest speakers, behind the scenes tours, work experience and apprenticeship opportunities with top companies such as Hampton by Hilton, Novotel, Pret, SSP Food Travel Experts, Flightworx, Universal Aviation, Manchester Airport Group, Harrods Aviation, Ryanair and many more.

Where will this course take me?

You can progress onto our Level 3 Hospitality and Events Management programme to enhance your skills and also provide you with further opportunities to advance into a career within the hospitality industry or even pursue a career in Event Management. You can also progress to an apprenticeship as a Commis or Senior Chef or follow a Hospitality Supervisor pathway. Alternatively you can progress into employment in a range of roles including food and beverage assistant, host or a front of house team member at a top hotel.

The Hospitality industry offers many exciting career opportunities and we provide clear pathways to a successful career in the industry.   You could be offering hospitality to one of the many VIP and escape lounges at London Stansted Airport, preparing and making food for restaurants as well as supplying food for airlines. The possibilities are vast and in addition to this you could be working in an international hotel, a Michelin starred restaurant, planning and hosting events or even running your own business.

Core modules

The course consists of 7 Mandatory Units. These include:

  • Introduction to the hospitality Industry
  • Food and beverage Service
  • Safe working practices for the hospitality Industry
  • Tools and equipment used in food preparation and service
  • Preparation of savoury products
  • Preparation of desserts, cakes, biscuits and pastry products

Students will have the option to achieve a Level 2 Barista Skills qualification in addition to the above qualification. This will involve learning about the range of equipment used in making beverages and how to operate the equipment to deliver the desired drink quality. You will also gain a good understanding of the products used in making beverages.

Engagement with Employers is a mandatory element of this qualification. A minimum of 30hours work experience is required as part of this programme.

How will I be assessed?

Assessment methods include a combination of examinations and written assignments.

This qualification is graded as Pass/Merit/Distinction/Distinction
