About the course

This course will give you a solid foundation in the hands-on skills that employers say are vital to keep these industries running successfully - skills that you will have for life!

Why study?

You will learn hand-fitting techniques and develop skills using hand tools to enable you to manufacture components. You will become proficient in using both lathes and milling machines to produce tools and mechanical components.

December 2016 sees the opening of Harlow College's Advanced Manufacturing Centre, which will house some of the most up to date manufacturing equipment, from rapid prototyping 3D printing, advanced 5 axis CNC programming and machining and the very latest aircraft and operational maintenance methods and techniques.

Educational visits will include World Skills Show events. There will also be a team building activity day. There will also be a range of speakers including local employers.

Core modules

Mandatory Units:
1. Working Safely in an engineering environment
2. Carrying Out Engineering Activities Efficiently and Effectively
3. Using and Communicating Technical Information

English and Maths
Work Experience – Minimum 30 hrs

Optional modules

Additional 3-6 units to be studied including:
• Producing Components using Hand Tools and Fitting Techniques
• Producing Mechanical Engineering Drawings Using CAD
• Preparing and Using Lathes for Turning Operations
• Preparing and Using Milling Machines

Observation, Learner Portfolio, Written Assessment.
