12 Months – 1 day a week at College & 4 Days a week in the workplace

Overview

The Retail industry offers many exciting career opportunities and we provide clear pathways to a successful career in the sector. You could work in a variety of shops and other retail establishments such as small boutiques, large high street chains and well known department stores are just a few examples. The possibilities are vast and in addition to this you could be working in remote environments for example in telephone, mail order and on-line retail. The UK’s retail sector is vibrant and offers many opportunities for early career progression. Example job roles include visual merchandiser supervisor, style advisor, department manager, store manager and many more.

4 GCSE grades at grades 1-5 (previously F-C)

How does an Apprenticeship Work?

Assessment methods include a combination of examinations, portfolio of evidence, practical observation and professional discussion.

This qualification is graded Pass/Distinction/Fail

Apprenticeship Standards are assessed through independent end point assessors. Your role as an apprentice may vary depending on your employer. Learners that have not yet achieved a minimum of grade 2 or E in GCSE English or maths will be required to complete a Level 1 Functional Skills qualification.

What does the course involve?

You will be required to demonstrate your knowledge, skills and behaviours across 16 different areas of retail. These include:

  • The Customer
  • Marketing
  • Sales and Promotion
  • Product and Service
  • Brand Reputation
  • Merchandising
  • Legalities and Governanc

How and when will I study?

Down to business, what can I do and what can I earn?

This apprenticeship provides an ideal stepping stone into specialist, team leading, supervisory or first line management roles within retail and higher level training. Specifically you could progress onto an apprenticeship such as the Level 3 Retail Team Leader Standard.

An apprenticeship comprises two parts:

  • Typically 20% study element (at Harlow College or Stansted Airport College).
  • 80% work based element with an employer. It is your responsibility to find an employer.
