About the course
This course will provide you with a good knowledge of the development of babies and young children. You will gain an understanding of the stages and sequences of brain development, physical development and social skills. There is an opportunity to progress onto Level 3, (with the relevant GCSE's) or work as an assistant within a nursery setting.
4 GCSEs Grades 2 - 3 or equivalent (this must include English at grade 3).
DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) clearance.
Preference given to those with work experience in child-related voluntary work e.g. Brownies/nursery, including a reference from the placement.
How much does it cost?
Free to those aged 16-18. If you are aged 19+ you can apply for an Advanced Learner Loan.
There is a range of financial support that you may be entitled to, including: Learner Support funds, grants and bursaries and employer support.
£100 for educational visits and £20 for resources. There will be a charge of £50 for a DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check.

Who is it suitable for?
Those who aspire to work with children in a nursery or primary school as a childminder or nanny. Those who want to be primary school teachers, teaching assistants or work with children in an educational setting.
You will complete a short term observation of a child on placement, observing their growth and development. You will prepare a nursery environment, indoor and outdoor on placement. You will also prepare a child friendly environment within the College's 'Stay & Play' facility.
You will lead play activities within placement and there is an opportunity to cook some healthy meals and learn First Aid.
- All learners gain a minimum of 250 hours of real childcare experience within a nursery/school setting.
- 40% of the learners were employed as a consequence of attending placement.
- 45% have progressed onto an apprentice childcare course.
Where will this course take me?
Level 3 Diploma in Childcare and Education (Early Years Educator). Employment as a primary school teacher or nursery teacher.
All 16 units are required for the full certificate
