18 Months – 1 day a week at College – 4 days a week in the workplace


Retail managers are responsible for delivering sales targets and a positive experience to customers that will encourage repeat custom and loyalty to the brand/business. It is a diverse role that includes leading and developing a team to achieve business objectives and work with a wide range of people, requiring excellent communication skills. Retail managers champion the way for personal development, training and continuous improvement, encouraging their team to develop their own skills and abilities to enhance business performance and productivity.

Am I ready to start?

4 GCSEs at grade 3-5 (previously D-C)

You will ideally have worked in a supervisory role within the industry.

How does an Apprenticeship Work?

Assessment methods include a combination of examinations, portfolio of evidence, practical observation and professional discussion.

This qualification is graded Pass/Distinction/Fail

What does the course involve?

You will be required to demonstrate your knowledge, skills and behaviours across 15 different areas of retail. These include:

  • The Customer
  • Leadership
  • Marketing
  • Sales and Promotion
  • Product and Service
  • Merchandising
  • Legalities and Governance
  • Team Performance
  • Developing Self and Others
  • Diversity

Assessment methods include a combination of examinations, portfolio of evidence, practical observation and professional discussion.

How and when will I study?

Apprenticeship Standards are assessed through independent end point assessors. Your role as an apprentice may vary depending on your employer. Learners that have not yet achieved a minimum of grade 4 or C in GCSE English or Maths will be required to complete a Level 2 functional skill qualification.

Down to business, what can I do and what can I earn?

There are a variety of outlets and retailers across Stansted Airport and beyond and this provides an excellent starting point for individuals wanting to pursue a career in management within this sector.

Progression from this apprenticeship would be into a retail store manager, senior retail manager or area manager position.

The Retail industry offers many exciting career opportunities and we provide clear pathways to a successful career in the sector.   You could work as a regional manager for large high street chains and well known department stores or move into more specialist areas like customer service, training and operations management. The possibilities are vast and the UK’s retail sector is vibrant and offers many opportunities for early career progression where you could be earning up to £70,000.

Retail outlets at Stansted Airport include, World Duty Free, Boots, Accessorize, Dixons, JD, Lacoste, Ted Baker, Hugo Boss and more.
