About the course
Understanding the basics of business in today’s world of work is an essential foundation for your future career. This course introduces you to the area of business and provides a good basis to go on to a more advanced work-related qualification.
4 GCSEs Grades 2 - 3 or equivalent and minimum Level 1 diagnostic in Maths and English. A satisfactory pass at a Level 1 qualification.
How much does it cost?
Age 16-18 free. 19+ will require an employer's contribution. There is a range of financial support that you may be entitled to, including: Learner Support funds, grants and bursaries and employer support.
Reduced fees may be available for 19+ learners. £90 per year to cover cost of educational visits, guest seakers and workshops, plus your own equipment and textbook.
You will need to provide stationery, folder, text book and a USB memory stick. Textbooks to be confirmed at enrolment. £100 for educational trips, visits, and guest speakers.
This course provides the basic business skills required by industry and provides a progression route to level 3 courses.
Where will this course take me?
There will be group activities in each unit, aimed at improving your team work skills, and providing opportunities for you to develop your leadership skills. You will work on your presentation skills, developing your public speaking and gaining confidence in your communication skills.

The remaining units cover a range of business topics:
- Business online
- Principles of Customer service
- Financial planning and forecasting
- Introducing retail business
- Promoting a Brand
- Sales and Personal Selling
- Building successful business teams and Recruitmentselection and employment.
You will need to successfully complete all units to achieve the Extended Certificate.
How will I be assessed?
Each unit will integrate pass, merit and distinction tasks which will either be word processed, presented individually or role play as appropriate. You will be given a target grade and will be constantly challenged to meet or even exceed this throughout the course.
There are two exams, one in Finance and the other Marketing. Additional assessment is via coursework. Where appropriate, coursework is uploaded to the college VLE.
