About the course

ESOL is all about integration and inclusivity. You will have the opportunity to make new friends and will be part of a welcoming and diverse community. It will develop your language and communication skills as well as increase your confidence in speaking, writing and reading English. Your study programme will also include enrolment onto our maths programme which can develop your skills & prepare you for employment or for progressing onto another course at a higher level. You can enrol throughout the year and will be entered for nationally recognised assessments when you are ready. This course is also available at Pre-entry Level.

Entry requirements

You must be aged 16 to 18.

Suitable for those who speak English as a second/other language and who are at beginner level to upper intermediate level.

How much does it cost?

There is a range of financial support that you may be entitled to, including: Learner Support funds, grants and bursaries.

Why study?

The ESOL courses will allow students to develop language and maths alongside personal and social development skills essential for further study and progression onto further qualifications and employment. Students are also part of a greater community and engage in extra curricular activities that enable them to build life skills and strong friendships. 

Where will this course take me?

Upon completion of L1 provision you can progress onto other vocational or academic areas within the college, which will lead onto a range of careers or higher education.

How will I be assessed?

Reading and writing assessments are based on understanding and reproducing texts from familiar, everyday formats such as appointment letters and newspaper articles.

Speaking assessments are conducted by your course tutor and take the form of discussions and individual speaking tasks. Learners are required to give presentations on a suitable topic.

Certificates will be issued by a nationally recognised awarding body.
