Access to Higher Education

An Access to Higher Education course is a one-year pre-university programme designed to help adults prepare for higher education in a subject they are passionate about. It is an excellent option for those returning to education after a break, considering a career change, or looking to develop new skills within their current role. Recognised by universities across the UK, Access Diplomas provide a clear pathway to degree-level study in your chosen subject area.

Why Study

You’ll spend around 2-3 days a week in college, taking part in engaging lessons in your chosen subject area, as well as completing coursework and assignments.

Our Access to HE courses are delivered by knowledgeable and experienced tutors who are dedicated to supporting you every step of the way. On successful completion, you’ll achieve an Access Diploma worth 60 credits. You’ll also receive expert guidance throughout the university application process, including help with UCAS applications, personal statements, and applying to university, so you can feel confident as you take the next step towards your future goals.

How much does an Access to HE course cost?

Our Access to HE courses cost £3384, however most students do not have to pay these fees upfront due to government funding and loan schemes.

If you’re aged 19-23 and it’s your first full Level 3 course, then you may not have to pay fees for an Access to HE Diploma. If not, or if you are 24+, you may be able to get help with the cost of your Access to HE course fees through a 19+ Advanced Learner Loan.

You won’t pay anything back until your income is over £25,000 per year. What’s more, if you go on to complete a higher education course funded by Student Finance England, the outstanding balance of your Advanced Learner Loan will be written off.

Are Access to HE courses for adults only?

Access to HE courses are specifically designed for adults aged 19 and over, so you’ll be studying alongside other adult learners rather than school-aged students.

Many students find the supportive and mature learning environment one of the biggest benefits of studying an Access course, as everyone is working towards similar goals and bringing valuable life experience to the classroom.

Do you need qualifications for an Access to HE course?

Yes. For all Access to HE courses, you will need English at Level 2 (GCSE or Functional Skills equivalent).

If you are applying for an Access to Medicine course, you will also need GCSE Maths and Science.

Maths at Level 2 is preferred for most courses. However, if you do not already have this qualification and can manage the additional workload, you may be able to study Level 2 Maths alongside your Access to HE course.

Can you study an Access course while working or with family commitments?

Yes. Many students study Access to Higher Education courses while working or caring for family. It requires planning and commitment, but support is available to help you manage your time.
