About Finding an Employer

You MUST have an employer before you can start an apprenticeship. You can search for an apprenticeship job here.

If you don't yet have an employer you can still apply for an apprenticeship while you continue to look. We can offer you advice on how to successfully secure an apprenticeship with an employer.

Duration

15-18 months

Overview

This qualification will prepare apprentices for junior and entry-level accounting roles. It delivers a solid foundation in finance administration, covering areas such as double entry bookkeeping and basic costing principles. Learners will then move on to mastering more complex accounting disciplines including financial processes, advanced bookkeeping, final accounts and ethical practices for accountants. The Advanced Diploma in Accounting qualification is at level 3 - equivalent to A-levels - and will equip apprentices with skills that can be directly applied in their roles.

Am I ready to start?

Individual employers set the selection criteria, but this is likely to include 5 GCSEs, including Maths and English, although some employers will accept other relevant qualifications and experience, including a relevant Level 2 qualification. Apprentices without English or Maths at Level 2 must achieve this prior to taking the end point assessment.

What does the course involve?

This apprenticeship standard is at Level 3, the current entry level for accounting. The structure allows students to achieve the AAT Foundation Certificate and Advanced Diploma in Accounting as their on-programme learning, if the employer feels this is appropriate. Modules within this qualification include Advanced Bookkeeping, Final Accountants Preparation, Management Accounting, Indirect Tax, Ethics for Accountants and Spreadsheets for Accounting.

To complete the Assistant Accountant apprenticeship, apprentices will be expected to complete:

  1. A synoptic end-test covering the knowledge and skills gained throughout the on-programme stage and detailed in the standard.
  2. A portfolio and reflective discussion which will comprise a range of evidence produced in the work-place to show that the Apprentice has met the knowledge, skills and behaviours detailed in the standard. The reflective discussion will be a structured interview to examine this evidence and the learner journey in more detail.

Down to business, what can I do and what can I earn?

  1. Audit Trainee
  2. Corporate Recovery Analyst
  3. Credit Controller
  4. Tax Accountant
