There is a shortage of qualified chefs in the UK and 100% of Hospitality and Catering students are employed within weeks of completing their course. WHAT WILL I DO?

You will undertake a wide range of experiences within the Hospitality and Catering area, based in our state-of-the-art kitchens and Skylight Restaurant. In the skills development kitchen you will increase your skills using a wide range of different foods using modern equipment, while in the Skylight Restaurant you will gain experience serving food and drink to paying customers. Our courses are delivered by tutors who have been professional caterers and front-of-house staff with a wealth of industrial experience.

The Hospitality and Catering industry offers many exciting career opportunities. Previous students have worked in an international hotel, a Michelin starred restaurant, The House of Commons, a cruise ship or are now running their own business.

Chef – Young Chefs' Academy

A passion for cooking starts at an early age, if you have a budding Chef in the family then joining our Young Chef Academy is the perfect way to develop their talent.

The Young Chefs' Academy is sponsored by Russums Catering Equipment. The course is aimed at Years 10 and 11 students and provides a great start for those interested in a career in food and culinary arts.

The course runs for 8 weeks based within the training kitchens at The College’s Harlow campus. It begins with an introduction to the kitchen, how to use the equipment and important health and safety issues. Over the following seven weeks you’ll be taught basic cookery skills covering vegetables, soups, pastas, sauces, meat, fish & desserts and more.

During the final week you will be able to invite guests to your Graduation ceremony where you will be presented with a medal and certificate. On this last Wednesday of your course you will prepare and serve a delicious dinner for your invited guests at The Skylight Restaurant at Harlow College.

The cost is £60 and the graduation ceremony is £10.00 per a person.

Food Production & Cooking NVQ Level 2

This course is designed to upskill young people working in the catering industry. You will study how to maintain a safe, hygienic and secure working environment, how to maintain, handle and clean knives, how to work effectively as part of a hospitality team and maintain food safety when storing, preparing and cooking food. Completing this course will mean you have a qualification that shows employers and customers you have the skills to work in a range of catering and hospitality roles like hotel receptionist, chef, bartender or waiter/waitress. 

Multi-Skilled in Food Preparation & Hospitality

This is a practical programme, which helps you to develop skills in cooking. These skills will allow you to prepare a wide range of dishes. The Certificate gives you an excellent grounding in the hospitality and catering industry.

Professional Chef – Patisserie & Confectionery

This programme is for anyone who works or wants to work as a patisserie chef in the catering and hospitality sector. The course will give you an overview of the many elements that make up being a professional pastry chef, which is a specialised and unique role within the catering & hospitality sector. If you are an experienced professional chef ready to take your cooking skills to the next level, or a student progressing from the Level 2 Practical Cookery Programme, this course will help you by providing you with an industry-standard qualification.

ATTENDANCE PATTERN: 3½ days over 5 days
You will be expected to attend on at least three evenings per year

Professional Cookery Level 2

This hands-on programme will equip you with the skills and knowledge to help you become a professional chef. It will open doors to various sectors of the food industry and provide you with many workplace essentials. Throughout this course you will gain high standard cookery skills in our state-of-the art facilities, alongside other fundamental knowledge in hygiene, health & safety, teamwork and customer care.
