About the Course
Functional Skills English qualifications are designed to help you improve your literacy skills and develop the confidence to use English effectively in everyday life, work and further study.
The course will support you to build practical English skills in reading, writing, speaking, listening and communication. You will explore relevant, real-life scenarios and develop the skills needed to communicate clearly, understand information, and respond confidently to unfamiliar situations.
This course is suitable for adults who already have a good foundation of English skills and would like to develop them further.
Entry Requirements
No formal qualifications or previous experience are required. However, this course is aimed at learners who already have a good foundation of English and are ready to develop their skills further.
Before enrolling, you will need to complete an initial assessment and diagnostic. This is an online assessment that takes around 90 minutes. A tutor will then review your results and discuss the most appropriate course level with you.

Why Study?
You will study the key areas of Functional Skills English, including:
- Speaking, listening and communication
- Reading
- Writing
You will attend weekly face-to-face classes and complete a range of activities and exercises to support your learning. Throughout the course, you will receive feedback from your tutor and take part in practical tasks to help you develop your skills.
Where will this course take me?
You may be able to progress:
- From Level 1 to Level 2 or GCSE
- From Level 2 to GCSE
Achieving a Functional Skills English qualification can support progression into further learning, employment, career development or everyday life.
How will I be assessed?
Speaking, listening and communication is assessed through presentations and/or discussions that are internally set and marked.
Reading and writing are assessed through exams.
You will also receive ongoing feedback during your lessons from your tutor and peers to help you prepare for assessment.
Will I have to provide anything?
All course materials are provided. However, we recommend that you bring a mobile device to class.
All classes are delivered face to face. We do not currently offer an online course. Learners are expected to attend all lessons in order to complete the course successfully.
