About the Course

Functional Skills Maths qualifications are designed to help you improve your numeracy skills and develop the confidence to use maths in everyday life, work and further study.

Achieving a maths qualification can increase your confidence and motivation, while supporting progression in employment, further learning or career development.

Entry Requirements

No formal qualifications or previous experience are required. However, this course is aimed at learners who already have a good foundation of maths skills and are ready to develop them further.

Before enrolling, you will need to complete an initial assessment and diagnostic. This is an online multiple-choice assessment that takes around one hour per subject. A tutor will then review your results and discuss the most appropriate course level with you.

Why Study?

Functional Skills Maths involves studying contextualised and relevant scenarios to develop practical problem-solving skills. You will learn how to analyse information, choose appropriate methods and apply mathematics to real-life situations.

  • Identifying and obtaining the information needed to tackle a problem
  • Applying mathematics in an organised way to find a solution
  • Interpreting and communicating solutions to practical problems

You will develop and refine problem-solving strategies, building the confidence and skills needed to tackle unfamiliar challenges. The mathematical skills gained are transferable to everyday contexts and the world of work.

You will attend weekly face-to-face classes and complete a range of activities and exercises to support your learning.

  • From Level 1 to Level 2 or GCSE Maths
  • From Level 2 to GCSE Maths

This course provides a strong foundation for progressing to a higher-level maths qualification, including GCSE Maths.

How will I be assessed?

You will receive ongoing feedback during your lessons from your tutor and peers to help you prepare for assessment.

The final assessment is completed through an exam at the end of the course.

Will I have to provide anything?

All course materials are provided. However, we recommend that you bring a mobile device to class.

All classes are delivered face to face. We do not currently offer an online course. Learners are expected to attend all lessons in order to complete the course successfully.
