Bright Futures training centre offer a number of different courses aimed at both people who are unemployed as well as individuals employed looking to upskill. These are offered both face-to-face as well as virtually.

Brighter Futures

This course has been designed by Harlow College together with the JCP specifically for parents. During the course you will study units on employment around childcare needs, making contingency plans, childcare options, child development & psychology, managing on a budget and identifying flexibility. Focusing heavily on building confidence and self-esteem, Brighter Futures covers various topics which aim to enable parents to find employment.

On completion of this course you will achieve an Entry Level 3 Certificate in Progression which includes the following units;

  • Recognising own skills for personal development
  • Teamwork skills
  • Improving assertiveness and decision making
  • Developing Skills for Gaining Employment
  • Job Seeking Skills
  • Volunteering

The course involves the importance of teamwork, how to identify transferable skills, and the use of technology in the workplace. We also look at how to make the most of opportunities that may arise, including alternative ways of working such as setting up own business.

CV Workshops

The CV workshop is aimed at people who need support with writing an effective CV to gain employment. It will enable you to understand the importance of a CV as a tool to help finding a job and covers information such as: 

  • Identifying the key types of information that should be in a CV 
  • How to format and present your CV 
  • How to present information neatly and accurately 
  • Additional sources of information, advice and guidance when completing a CV 

By the end of the session you will have produced an Entry Level CV. On completion of this course learners can develop their knowledge by enrolling onto our Social Media for Job Prospecting or Digital Skills for Work courses to enhance their job prospects.

Digital Skills for Work

These single unit qualifications are designed to support you to develop the digital skills that will support you in gaining employment and to perform your job roles effectively. The aim of this qualification is to equip you with the digital skills that will be useful in a work context, including handling information, creating and editing digital content, and communicating using digital skills.

You will also learn how to operate safely and responsibly online or when using digital devices, and how to solve basic technical problems for yourself.

Essential Digital Skills

Essential Digital Skills qualifications are intended to support adults who want to learn digital skills for life, their work or for use in further study. It is estimated that one in five adults lack foundation skills in digital technology. To fill this gap, the Department for Education is introducing digital skills qualifications based on the essential digital skills framework. The qualifications will be available at Entry Level 3 and Level 1 and can be accessed from September 2020.

Fresh Start

Fresh start is a motivational opportunity that adopts a new approach on how to tackle the jobs market. It is aimed at individuals that need additional support with looking and applying for jobs and building their confidence of to take a fresh look at employment opportunities, to promote positivity and inspiration. Our Fresh Start tutors give the support to gain new skills that will help your journey back into work with a qualification that demonstrates the necessary skills to help gain employment.

Getting into Construction

This programme is designed to support individuals to gain qualifications required to secure employment in the construction industry. During this course you will complete the Entry Level 3 Extended Certificate in Employability Skills which offers transferrable employability skills needed for employment such as teamwork, communication and problem-solving. This qualification is designed to enable you to develop the skills required to work within the construction environment and is tailored to the requirements of the industry. The course covers units such as self-management skills, safe learning in the workplace, preparing for interview and searching for a job. You will work collaboratively to complete the following three projects as part of a team;  

  • From tender to toolbox – setting up business
  • The self-employed trade’s person
  • The build up to getting a job

During this course you will complete the Level 1 Award in Health & Safety in a Construction Environment and this will enable you to undertake the CITB Operatives Health, Safety and Environment examination, both are required before you can apply for a CSCS card. Your tutor will guide you through the theory elements of the construction environment to enable you to pass your CITB exam. 

On successful completion of the course Harlow College will fund one CITB test (any re-takes must be self-funded) and after successfully passing your CSCS test we will fund your CSCS Green Labourer card.

Level 1 Skills for Working in Adult, Health and Child Care Sectors

This qualification supports learners embarking on their first experience of work in the Health, Adult Care and Child Care sectors - as part of a work placement, work experience or in supporting the unemployed in their return to work.

This qualification is for learners wishing to gain an understanding of the Health, Adult Care and Child Care sectors alongside gaining essential employability knowledge and skills. On completion learners will be able to understand and demonstrate suitable work, personal skills, attitudes, thinking and behaviour and will be more confident at interview, when completing an application or on their first day working in the Health, Adult Care and Child Care sectors.

The course runs for 5 days per week, 09:30-15:00

Mental Wellbeing

The Entry Level 3 Mental Wellbeing qualification provides an introduction to mental wellbeing: what constitutes good mental health and mental ill-health; how to keep mentally healthy; how to recognise deteriorating mental health and support friends and family with mental health issues; how to access available support. 

Topics covered include:  

  • Understand what is meant by ‘mental health’ 
  • Understand how to look after own mental wellbeing 
  • Understand how to support friends and family with mental health difficulties 
  • Know about support for mental ill-health 

This interactive 3 day course will include a mixture of case studies, videos & scenarios to help support you to recognise the key characteristics of mental wellbeing and the best approach to effectively deal with it. 

This qualification is assessed through an online multiple choice exam at the end of the course. You will complete activates during the course to support your knowledge and to prepare you for this exam.

Moving On

Moving on is a motivational course designed for learners who need to develop essential skills and knowledge, as well as building their confidence to progress into employment. The Entry Level 3 Certificate in Skills for Independent Living focuses on units such as:

The course focuses on developing personal and social skills, improving confidence and developing ideas with individuals to enable progression into the voluntary sector or employment. With a new-found confidence learners can progress onto a Professionals Skills course or may want to develop their literacy, numeracy or Digital skills further.

Optimise

Optimise has been designed for the older workers who wish to return to employment but who may not have the confidence to apply for employment in the current job market. This course has been designed specifically for the older job seeker who already has skills they have learnt through work or life experience but who need guidance on how to hone those skills to get back into the job market.

The course includes units such as;

  • Self-awareness
  • Working in a customer-friendly way
  • Producing a CV
  • Effective communication in the workplace
  • Applying for a job

Preparing to Work in Adult Social Care

This Level 1 Award in Preparing to Work in Adult Social Care qualification is a nationally recognised qualification which enables candidates to apply for jobs within the care sector. This qualification is extremely useful for anyone who wants to work in the care industry. By the end of the course you will have learnt the theory elements of Adult Social Care and have gained valuable employability skills. Units covered are;

In addition you will also achieve a Level 2 Award in Awareness of Dementia qualification which enables you to develop knowledge, understanding and skills in essential areas such as awareness of dementia, equality, diversity, inclusion and individual rights.

There are a variety of roles available within the care sector. Direct care roles include;

  • Care worker
  • Personal Assistant
  • Community support and Outreach worker
  • Activities Co-ordinator  

You can also apply for non-direct roles such as administration roles including finance, HR and marketing.

Prince’s Trust Team Programme

Unemployed and aged 16-25? The Prince’s Trust Team programme is designed to build confidence, meet new people and develop knowledge and skills that will help you move into further education or employment.

This fun and engaging 12 week programme will require you to attend 5 days a weeks. This programme is very interactive and engaging and you will complete a variety of activities that will not only get you using your logical thinking skills but will also get you moving!

SIA Security

To gain employment within the security industry you will be to obtain an SIA licence. During this course you will complete three qualifications; 

The Level 1 Extended Certificate in Employability Skills focuses on developing personal and social skills to enable you to progress in to employment; it is tailored to suit requirements of the security industry. Examples of the course units you will cover are; effective communication in the workplace, individual rights and responsibilities in society, positive attitudes and behaviours at work and career progression. This programme is delivered using a project-based approach; you will work collaboratively to complete two projects as part of a team:

  • Searching for a job
  • Setting up a security company

This leads onto the Level 3 Award in Emergency First Aid at Work qualification which is a new mandatory requirement that all SIA trained security staff must hold from April 2021. This qualification covers knowledge such as roles and responsibilities for the first aider, how to assess an incident, skills in CPR, providing first to a causality who is choking, and dealing with external bleeding and shock.  

Lastly you will move onto the Level 2 Award in Door Supervision which is the nationally recognised Security Industry Authority (SIA) qualification. This course is a requirement for anyone wishing to work in the security industry. It will guide you through the theory and practical elements to enable you to pass your SIA exams, including Physical Intervention, allowing you to gain employment as a Door Supervisor and work within the Manned Guarding environment.

All courses are delivered by tutors with Security Industry backgrounds and experience. Upon successful completion of your qualification, Harlow College will fund your SIA licence.

*If you do not meet the eligibility criteria the Level 2 Award in Door Supervision qualification can be independently funded at a cost of £190 (SIA licence will also need to be funded on successful completion of the qualification) 

Social Media for Job Prospecting

The Level 1 Award in Social Media for Job Prospecting qualification is intended to provide you with an understanding of how social media can be used when searching for a job and the risks involved in using social media. They will develop the skills to use different social media platforms to support applications for jobs. 

This qualification is designed to support you to progress into employment. However, the knowledge and skills they acquire will also be useful should you decide to progress to further learning. 

Topics covered within this course include: 

  • Know about social media platforms 
  • Know about safe and responsible use of social media 
  • Know about social media for job prospecting 
  • Be able to use social media for job prospecting 

A smart device will be required for this course, ideally a mobile phone or tablet. If you do not have access to one then we will supply one for the duration of the course. 

Working in Customer Service

This Level 1 Award in Preparing to Work in Adult Social Care qualification is a nationally recognised qualification which enables candidates to apply for jobs within the care sector. This qualification is extremely useful for anyone who wants to work in the care industry. By the end of the course you will have learnt the theory elements of Adult Social Care and have gained valuable employability skills. Units covered are;

Our Hospitality course is designed to enable progression into securing employment within the hospitality industry. On completion of the course you will gain a Level 1 Certificate in Skills for Hospitality and Catering, and a Level 2 Certificate in Food Safety. These skills are an essential requirement when working in this industry and you will also gain valuable employability skills and customer service knowledge along the way. 

During the course you will cover topics such as;

  • Health & Safety and Food Safety Awareness in Catering
  • Customer Service in the Hospitality Industry 
  • Event Planning
  • Bookings, Orders and Payments
  • Menu Planning
  • Meeting Special Dietary Needs

In addition to these skills you will also cover the importance of team work and communication skills within an employment setting, and given guidance on how to apply for a job within the hospitality sector. 

Working in the Retail Industry

This Level 1 Certificate in skills for Retail qualification is aimed at those wishing to work in the retail industry. You will study units covering the major aspects of retail including preparing for an interview, customer service, product pricing and labelling, handling cash payments and the retail selling process alongside learning valuable employability skills.

On successful completion of this course you will have the confidence and skills to seek employment within the retail sector. These are examples of the roles available within the retail sector:

  • Sales Assistant
  • Store Manager
  • Cashier
  • Visual Merchandiser
  • Team Leader/ Floor Manager
