Student Celebration

Award winners at the Student Celebration Awards

On Monday 20th June Harlow College held its annual Student Celebration Awards.

It was a wonderful evening and one in which the students played key roles in all aspects of the event, including organisation, presentation, catering and technical support.

The show kicked off with a stunning performance by Level 3 Dance students, who came back to wow the audience again during the interval with a powerful, contemporary version of the song 'Cell Block Tango'.

Hosts for the evening were Level 3 Performing Arts Acting students Lyle Kilbey and Olu Kayode, both of whom did a fantastic job of compering the proceedings and entertaining the crowd with their banter and professionalism.

All the young people receiving awards were nominated by their tutors for outstanding achievement, both academically and in terms of their commitment and drive to overcome adversity. Their personal journeys are truly inspirational and a welcome antidote to the negative image often presented of young people.

The awards were again sponsored by local employers, who continue to support the College with their generosity. These partnerships form a crucial part of student life, as there is often the opportunity for work experience, apprenticeship placements and the exchanging of skills, all vital to the growth of the local economy.

Harlow MP Rob Halfon introduced the evening, saying: "This awards ceremony is a very special evening. It celebrates not just the academic achievements of the students but also their determination and their effort. This college excels in making sure that we get the best out of our students and we give everyone the best possible chance in life."

Harlow College Principal Karen Spencer said of the event: "It's always fantastic to celebrate the achievement of our students – the Awards Evening is one of our Harlow College highlights of the year as we also get to do this alongside parents, employers and members of our local community. The awards this year showed what a talented group of students we have – there were great dance and music performances, as well as recognition of excellence and progress to top universities and employers. Our students really are a credit to Harlow!"
