WHAT'S IT ALL ABOUT?

Due to our ageing population, nursing and care are becoming ever more necessary. Our courses prepare you for providing the specialist care that vulnerable people of all ages need. Specialist training is given for those wishing to work in care homes and in social care settings (e.g. hospices, care homes for the elderly or for people with disabilities or mental illness).

WHAT WILL I DO?

You will learn a wide range of skills including anatomy and physiology; personal and professional development; safeguarding and dementia care. Part of your course will be in College and part in the community so that you gain experience of working in a variety of health and social care settings, benefiting from practical, hands-on training. Our state-of-the-art facilities include a brand-new hospital ward, therapy room and a domiciliary care flat. The College has strong links with MENCAP, Age UK, Streets2Homes and Princess Alexandra Hospital, allowing you to benefit from their experience.

WHAT CAN I DO NEXT?

Higher education in areas such as nursing, midwifery, social work and psychology. Career opportunities in areas such as nursing, social work, midwifery, mental health nursing, teaching and counselling. You could also undertake an Apprenticeship in a related subject.

Counselling and Applied Psychology HNC Level 4

If you're passionate about supporting others and understanding human behaviour, the Level 4 HNC in Counselling and Applied Psychology is your gateway to a meaningful career in roles like mental health coach, trainee counsellor or wellbeing advisor.

This two-year course provides a solid introduction to counselling and psychology, helping you develop core professional and personal skills through a blend of academic learning and real-world experience. You'll explore key topics such as Developing Empathic Communication, Digital Approaches in Caring Professions, and Self-Awareness and Reflective Practice, all designed to deepen your understanding of the field and prepare you for future study or employment.

A key part of the course is a 100-hour work placement, giving you the opportunity to apply theory to practice, gain hands-on experience, and grow in confidence in a professional setting. You'll also build valuable transferable skills like communication, teamwork, and reflective thinking - highly sought after in both the workplace and further education.

Whether you're continuing to Level 5 or stepping into a career that makes a difference, this course equips you with the knowledge, behaviours and experience needed to succeed.

Dental Nurse Apprenticeship

This occupation is in the healthcare field, specifically dentistry. Dental nurses work in clinical settings such as NHS or private practices, hospitals, specialist clinics, community services, or military dental clinics. Their main role is to provide chairside support to dental professionals, ensuring high standards of cleanliness and infection control. Responsibilities include preparing instruments, materials, and medications, sterilising equipment, keeping records, managing stock, and ensuring patient comfort throughout their visit.

Health & Science Level 1

This is a level 1 aimed to provide an introduction to Further Education and the courses on offer. It comprises of core units that will prepare students for a level 2 qualification, pastoral units that will give students essential skills for personal development, and subject units to give an example of future courses. Other pathways include Engineering, Sport and Business.

Health & Social Care Level 2

This qualification is designed for anyone considering a career in the health or social care sector. The course includes a certificate in understanding working in the health and social care sector and additional learning about the social care sector and the main human body systems (anatomy and physiology). It is a good foundation year for progression to the level 3 course - T level health. 

Oral Health Practitioner Apprenticeship

Oral Health Practitioners operate with a high degree of autonomy, performing a variety of preventive oral health procedures, such as applying fluoride varnish, taking impressions, and conducting tooth brushing with patients. This role fits within the dental career structure above a dental nurse but below a dental hygienist or dentist, complementing the work of other dental professionals.

In addition to their clinical responsibilities, Oral Health Practitioners provide oral health education and preventive interventions to various community groups, including schools, care homes, and ante-natal groups. They are also involved in general health screenings, assessing conditions such as diabetes and blood pressure alongside oral health assessments to offer holistic care.
