WHAT'S IT ALL ABOUT?

Science impacts on our lives every day. It improves our health, helps solve crime and broadens our understanding of the world around us. Studying Science can help you to progress to university or move to many careers such as forensics, biomedical science, nursing and veterinary work. Fascinating new discoveries are made daily in laboratories around the world and you could be part of this exciting world of exploration.

WHAT WILL I DO?

Applied Science is a practical, hands-on course where you will study Physics, Chemistry and Biology. You will also develop your skill in maths and English. These courses will give you a broad scientific base which will prepare you for higher level study, including a Higher Apprenticeship, or employment.

WHAT CAN I DO NEXT?

This course can lead on to many different careers. Students have gone on to careers in Biomedical Science, Forensic Science, Veterinary Nursing, Chemical Engineering, Child or Adult Nursing, Wildlife Management, Paramedic Science and Criminology. You can also progress to university, an Apprenticeship or into employment.

Biology AS/A Level

Biology is a good supporting subject for many other career paths, and is respected academically by universities for entry to a variety of degree courses. Biology can lead to a wide range of careers such as Medicine, Veterinary, Pharmaceutical, Environmental and Conservation work, teaching, cosmetic industries, food technology, and forensic science.

Biology GCSE

Studying biology will help you develop a curiosity about the natural world, give an insight into how science works and give an appreciation of its relevance to everyday life. The scope and nature of this biology course is broad, coherent and practical.

Chemistry AS/A Level

A Level Chemistry builds upon the knowledge gained at GCSE but explores it much further. It is a demanding and hugely rewarding subject that encourages deep learning and develops higher-order skills. This course covers a wide range of chemistry topics that build from the basics of formulae writing, calculating chemical quantities and atomic structure. We examine the application of these core principles, in the context of intermediate bonding and the effects of intermolecular forces and redox reactions, organic chemistry, equilibria, transition metals and organic nitrogen chemistry. This conceptual learning is underpinned by practical skills.

Health & Science Level 1

This is a level 1 aimed to provide an introduction to Further Education and the courses on offer. It comprises of core units that will prepare students for a level 2 qualification, pastoral units that will give students essential skills for personal development, and subject units to give an example of future courses. Other pathways include Engineering, Sport and Business.

Laboratory Technician Apprenticeship

Laboratory technicians work in a wide range of organisations, including chemical, primary and secondary pharmaceutical, biotechnology, formulated products, nuclear companies and analytical science services. A laboratory technician may carry out both routine and one-off laboratory testing and perform a variety of technical support functions across the organisation. In any context working safety and ethically is paramount and many companies operate under highly regulated conditions because of the need to control the quality and safety of products, for example medicines. Laboratory technicians are expected to work both individually and as part of a team. They are able to work with minimum supervision, taking responsibility for the quality and accuracy of the work that is undertaken. They are proactive in finding solutions to problems and identifying areas for improving the business.

Physics AS/A Level

Everything can be explained using physics. From the formation of stars and galaxies, to the behaviour of atoms, and even how guitar amplifiers work, all involve an understanding of physics.

This course will give you a thorough understanding on how the principles of physics can be used to describe the world around us, using both a theoretical and experimental approach. As mathematics is the language of physics, emphasis will be placed on developing mathematical models that can be used to not only explain the physics but provide verification of experimental results.

Science – Applied Science BTEC Extended Diploma

This is the course for someone who loves 'hands on' Science. It combines in-depth study of Biology, Chemistry and Physics, whilst developing core skills in English and Mathematics. You will spend most of your college time in laboratories, carrying out a variety of practical scientific investigations. It is an appropriate course for anyone wishing to pursue a career in any of the science industries and for those who wish to study Science at university. The course lasts for two years and the Extended Diploma is equivalent to three A Levels in Science.

Science – Applied Science BTEC Awards Level 2

The course provides the essential core of scientific knowledge and applied skills so that you will be able to progress to a Level 3 Applied Science qualification. This in turn will enable you to progress within a wide choice of Science-based allied career pathways, apprenticeships and/or employment.
