It's a competitive world. Our vocational courses will give you the skills, knowledge and qualifications that employers are looking for. We'll give you the edge you need to get on the career ladder in your chosen occupation. You could also go on to higher education or an apprenticeship.

All our courses include aspects of English and maths. If you have not achieved a grade 4 or above in English and maths at school you will continue to study these subjects via a weekly timetabled lesson.

Art & Design Level 2 Diploma

A broad introduction to the study of art and design with the opportunity to produce experimental work in a range of subject areas – which covers painting, drawing, printmaking, textiles, ceramics, 3D design, and graphic design.

Art, Fine Art & Design Level 3 Extended Diploma

Are you looking to become an illustrator, graphic designer, interior designer, art teacher, fine artist, concept artist or one of the many other careers in art and design? Then this is the course for you! This course is suitable for those looking to pursue a specialist career in the creative industries. It provides you with the necessary industry relevant skills, knowledge and understanding to access appropriate entry level roles, training programmes or apprenticeships in the creative sector.

Fashion and Promotion Level 3

Are you hoping to find a career in the world of fashion? This course has pathways in both fashion design and fashion styling/ promotion. The course covers all aspects of the fashion industry including design, illustration, pattern cutting and production, marketing, styling and promotion, business and retail, textiles, photography and more! This course is suitable for students looking to pursue a specialist career in the creative industries. It provides students with the necessary industry relevant skills, knowledge and understanding to access appropriate entry level roles, training programmes or apprenticeships in the creative sector.

Photography Level 3 Extended Diploma

Are you looking for a career in photography? This course will prepare you for studio and location photography working in fashion, sport, travel, food, portraits, wedding, photo journalism, forensics, teaching, fine art and many other avenues of photography. You will experience both digital and traditional photography. This course is suitable for students looking to pursue a specialist career in the creative industries. It provides students with the necessary industry relevant skills, knowledge and understanding to access appropriate entry level roles, training programmes or apprenticeships in the creative sector.

App Design Level 3

This is a full-time course over two years (Extended Diploma), using a range of assessment methods including assignments, presentations to industry professionals, coursework and live briefs.

These will aim to develop the skills, knowledge and understanding relevant to specific creative activities in app design and in the creation of your own professional portfolio. Experienced teaching staff will provide industry standard training in a wide range of practical and theoretical areas to ensure you are well prepared for progression into university, apprenticeships or into industry where there is a need for an app. You will work in our dedicated Creative Industries Centre and have access to specialist equipment.

Applied Science Pathway – Applied, Medical and Environmental Science Level 3

This course offers students with an interest in science to study three different science qualifications which ensures learners have a broad yet exciting science curriculum which can lead to a wide range of higher education courses.

Each qualification is equivalent to 1 A level which means this course is equivalent to 3 A levels.

Art, Design and Media – Level 1 Diploma

This course will introduce students to the materials and processes used in art , design and media, and the skills needed to record and express ideas. Students are given the opportunity to explore, develop and test their creativity and commitment to the subject and will gain an understanding of the job roles available in the creative industries.

Beauty Therapy Level 2 Diploma

Learn the basic skills and techniques of Beauty Therapy. You have the opportunity to try out your practical skills on your fellow students and the final assessment of these skills will be carried out by applying treatments to paying members of the public.

Beauty Therapy Level 2 Diploma – Part-time

Learn the basic skills and techniques of Beauty Therapy. You have the opportunity to try out your practical skills on your fellow students and the final assessment of these skills will be carried out by applying treatments to paying members of the public.

Beauty Therapy Level 3

This course is ideal for therapists looking for a career in all aspects of the beauty industry, potential entrepreneurs aspiring to set up a small business or for those looking to work within the spa/leisure industry.

Beauty Therapy Level 3 – Part-time

This course is ideal for therapists looking for a career in all aspects of the beauty industry, potential entrepreneurs aspiring to set up a small business or for those looking to work within the spa/leisure industry.

Brickwork Level 2

Bricklayers develop skills that can be used worldwide. In the UK, efficient and qualified bricklayers will typically earn between £100 - £150 per day. The Level 2 Diploma will enable you to develop and hone your skills in the craft of bricklaying and will enable you to experience all aspects of the craft. You will also gain a greater understanding of the construction environment.

Building Services Level 1 (Plumbing and Electrical)

The course delivered will be a Level 1 Diploma in Construction which covers an introduction to Health and Safety in construction and a number of plumbing units and electrical units. This will give you an insight and taster into the building services industry. The qualification is designed with a practical focus but does contain some theory and knowledge questions. 

Overall you will be completing 13 units intended to improve your hand skills and knowledge to enable you to progress effectively onto the next level of qualification.

Business Level 3

This course offers the potential opportunity to progress to employment in a wide range of job roles across the business sector and digital industries – for example in roles such as business administrator, finance assistant, HR assistant and marketing assistant and a lot more.

This course is aimed at supporting young people to re-integrate back into education to support them to find a future course or career path that’s suitable to them. This programme develops confidence and self esteem as well as self-awareness. It allows students to develop skills that they will use in employment or on further courses including English and maths. Students also spend time researching courses and/or employment that they may wish to move on to on completion of the programme. You will either study the Certificate or Diploma qualification depending on what we feel is most appropriate for you.

Creative Media Production – Journalism

This is the first step in your career in one of the most exciting careers available. Led by a team of former journalists, this programme is designed to introduce learners to the fast-paced environment of print, broadcast and online journalism. You will learn how to improve your writing style, how to conduct interviews, what job roles are available, and how to improve your chances of getting your first foot in the door of this very competitive industry.

Creative Media Production – Sports Journalism

Learn how to create, shoot, and edit your own video and audio content, write articles and reports for print, TV and radio and explore what can be achieved using a variety of different mediums.

Your projects will coincide with many of the key events in the sporting calendar and you will be expected to research and produce content on a range of different sports on a variety of levels. 

Each year students will complete a final major project. This project will be chosen by you and you will enjoy a large amount of freedom to create a project that you are passionate about. The grade you receive for this project will determine the final grade for your qualification. 

Classes are taught though face-to-face in a classroom setting in one of our PC or Mac suites. You will have access to TV and video editing equipment, cameras, social media hardware, the greenscreen studio and radio suite. You will receive 1-2-1 tutorials to help nurture and develop your work. The projects will consist of a mix of independent and group work.

Creative Technologies (Games, Multimedia & Graphics)

Are you ready to launch your career in the dynamic world of the creative industries? Harlow College have launched the UAL Level 4 Creative Technologies (Games, Multimedia & Graphics) course, designed for individuals eager to break into the creative sector and build an impressive portfolio. This course is perfect for those aiming to progress to university or stand out in job interviews with a strong showcase of skills and projects.

Creative Writing Level 3

This course has been designed to nurture budding authors, to build their confidence and develop their writing skills, to expose them to a range of different genre and writing medium, help them to hone their craft, and most importantly, build their confidence. In year 1 you will concentrate on creative projects, writing material for a range of different audiences, and developing original content for a number of different mediums, including film, TV, radio, and stage. In the second year the focus switches towards factual writing, examples that you might like to explore might include travel, reference, history, or biographical, to name a few. 

Early Years Practitioner Diploma Level 2

This course will provide you with a good knowledge of the development of babies and young children. You will gain an understanding of the stages and sequences of brain development, physical development and social skills. There is an opportunity to progress onto Level 3, (with the relevant GCSE's) or work as a qualified level 2 practitioner.

Electrical Installations Level 2

This programme is a practical, work-related course. You will learn by completing projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations. It covers the basic underpinning knowledge and technical practical skills needed to be an Electrician. The programme provides a good foundation for future careers opportunities or progression on to a more advanced work-related qualification.

Electrical Installations – Level 3

This is as a practical, work-related course. You learn by completing projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations. It covers the basic underpinning knowledge and technical practical skills needed to be an Electrician. The programme provides a good foundation for future careers opportunities or progression on to a more advanced work-related qualification.

Engineering Operations (Pre-apprenticeship) Level 2

This course is a practical based Engineering coursed designed to support learners from full time education to progress into an apprenticeship (what we call a pre-apprenticeship). It can also be used to help learners progress from Level 2 to Level 3. We cover a broad range of Engineering (machining, mechanical, electrical) to help learners find what they enjoy doing and then look to help them progress into their future doing what they enjoy!

Throughout the course there will be large amounts of practical work included in the relevant topics e.g. programming CNC machines, working with hand tools, manual machining on lathes and mills, mechanical maintenance, electrical maintenance and testing, electronic circuit building. Various Engineering and Manufacturing companies will be visited in the local area and further trips to Engineering Conferences.

In today's tough job market more and more employers expect candidates to have at least a grade 4 in GCSE English. This course will suit those already working and those still seeking employment. It's a perfect opportunity to brush up on the essential skills required by employers, and gain a qualification in the process.

ESOL (English as a Second or Other Language)

ESOL is all about integration and inclusivity. You will have the opportunity to make new friends and will be part of a welcoming and diverse community. It will develop your language and communication skills as well as increase your confidence in speaking, writing and reading English. Your study programme will also include enrolment onto our maths programme which can develop your skills & prepare you for employment or for progressing onto another course at a higher level. You can enrol throughout the year and will be entered for nationally recognised assessments when you are ready. This course is also available at Pre-entry Level.

Extended Diploma in Public Services

This course is suitable for those interested in a career in the public services or those wishing to study a variety of degrees including Law, Criminology, Politics, or Public Services. The public sector is the UK's largest employer and includes central and local government, the armed forces and the emergency services.

Food Production & Cooking NVQ Level 2

This course is designed to upskill young people working in the catering industry. You will study how to maintain a safe, hygienic and secure working environment, how to maintain, handle and clean knives, how to work effectively as part of a hospitality team and maintain food safety when storing, preparing and cooking food. Completing this course will mean you have a qualification that shows employers and customers you have the skills to work in a range of catering and hospitality roles like hotel receptionist, chef, bartender or waiter/waitress. 

Games Design Level 1

Gym Instructing Certificate – Full-time

The qualification is based on the Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity (CIMSPA) professional standards for instructing gym based exercise. Throughout this qualification, learners will develop their knowledge and understanding of relevant anatomy and physiology. They will also develop the knowledge, understanding and skills to pre-screen clients and check their readiness to exercise, health and safety and induct individuals and small groups to gym equipment.They will also plan and instruct gym-based exercise programmes. In parallel, learners will develop their communication and customer service skills, their awareness of environmental sustainability and their commercial skills, all of which are valued highly by employers. Problem solving, team working skills and research skills will also be developed.

Hair and Beauty Level 1 Diploma

The Level 1 Diploma in Hair and Beauty is designed to build on your interest and passion for the hair and beauty industry, covering a wide range of skills from styling, plaiting and twisting to make-up or nail art.

This qualification is designed for those who wish to prepare for further learning or training in the hair and beauty sector. It will also enable you to perform your own basic services and to assist others in the salon.

Hairdressing – Level 2 Women’s Hairdressing (Full-time)

This course will give you the skills and knowledge you need to provide basic shampoo and condition, styling men's and women's hair, plaiting and twisting, the art of dressing hair and, salon reception duties. You will gain an insight into working in the sector and knowledge of the health, safety and hygiene requirements. It will support progression onto a Level 2 course.

Hairdressing – Level 3 Hair Services (Full-time)

Do you want to be a senior hair stylist, colourist or even run your own hair salon? If you are already working as a hairdresser and have a level 2 qualification, this course is the perfect next step. You can build on the skills you have already gained to become creative and highly skilled in a wide range of hairdressing services, including colour, bridal hair, creative hairdressing and the promotion and selling of products. When you complete this course you will have all the essential skills you need to gain employment or start your own business in the hairdressing industry!

Health & Science Level 1

This is a level 1 aimed to provide an introduction to Further Education and the courses on offer. It comprises of core units that will prepare students for a level 2 qualification, pastoral units that will give students essential skills for personal development, and subject units to give an example of future courses. Other pathways include Engineering, Sport and Business.

Health & Social Care Level 2

This qualification is designed for anyone considering a career in the health or social care sector. The course includes a certificate in understanding working in the health and social care sector and additional learning about the social care sector and the main human body systems (anatomy and physiology). It is a good foundation year for progression to the level 3 course - T level health. 

ICT Level 2

Take your first steps towards a career in the digital industry. You'll learn the skills to produce IT systems and software, websites and mobile apps, and video, graphics and animation.This  programme specialises in wide-ranging subjects across computer systems, hardware and software. IT is an ever-changing industry full of possibilities and this course will build your skills and understanding preparing you for further study.

Introduction to Health, Social Care and Children and Young Peoples Settings

The course provides you with the basic knowledge to progress on to higher level programmes or out into the sector. You will have work experience within the sector that will draw on your theoretical knowledge and allow you to understand the sector and explore the variety of job roles within the sector.

Have you ever wondered about how to make the best of your camera? Want to learn about the world of digital photography? This course is for you. Join us for 3 engaging evening sessions that will transform your digital camera from perplexing device into your creative tool of choice. In week 1 you’ll master the fundamentals of your digital camera. You can bring your own digital camera along or borrow one of our DSLR cameras. Music Performance & Production

If music is more than just a passion, it’s a profession, then this course is designed for you. Your music skills and knowledge will be enhanced. We aim to produce highly skilled, resilient, positive and versatile young performers and artists. Students work in collaboration with each other to meet the challenge of termly projects resulting in live concerts and music productions. You will explore music performance, composition, live sound and recording, whilst developing your study skills in research, analysis and critical evaluation. You shall also be given the opportunity to develop music theory and skills of your own choosing throughout the course.

Performing & Production Arts Level 2

This is an excellent course for increasing self-confidence, communication and performance skills. It will provide a foundation for further study in this field and possible progression to a career in the performing arts industry. This qualification will give you a broad experience and understanding of performing arts as a collaborative activity and prepares you for the reality of working in the sector. 

Performing & Production Arts – Acting/Musical Theatre

We aim to produce highly skilled, resilient, positive and versatile young performers and artists. You will have the opportunity to develop your understanding of the demands of professional training in the performing arts dance industry in our purpose-built and modern acting studios and 110 seated theatre. It is for anyone who wants to study dance, performing arts, musical theatre or even production arts.

Performing & Production Arts – Dance

This course is designed to produce highly skilled, passionate and versatile young performers and artists. You will have the opportunity to develop your understanding of the demands of professional training in the performing arts industry in our purpose-built and modern dance and acting studios and theatre. It is for anyone who wants to study dance, choreography, musical theatre, dance in education and production arts.

Personal Training Level 3

This qualification is designed to provide the knowledge, understanding and practical skills needed to work as a Personal Trainer in a variety of settings. This qualification supports progression into employment or self-employment as a Personal Trainer. The qualification will enable learners to become qualified Personal Trainers, ready to make a positive contribution to the workplace and to the health and well-being of a broad range of clients with different needs, in different types of environment. The qualification is mapped to the CIMSPA (Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity) Personal Trainer Professional Standard. This qualification has also been aligned to the Personal Trainer apprenticeship standard and could be used to support delivery of the apprenticeship.

Plumbing Level 2

For candidates who want to work as plumbers in the building services engineering sector. This qualification does not make candidates fully qualified plumbers but enables them to gain the relevant hand skills and knowledge through studying Health and safety, Electrical principles, Scientific principles, Plumbing processes, Cold water systems, Hot water systems, Sanitation, Central heating systems and Drainage systems.

Plumbing Level 3

For those who want to work as plumbers in the building services engineering sector. This qualification does not make you a fully qualified plumber but enables you to gain the relevant hand skills and knowledge through studying cold water systems, hot water systems, sanitation, central heating systems and environmental technology systems and site procedures and planning. You will also be required to undertake a minimum of 45-day industry placement.

Policing Extended Diploma

The NCFE Level 3 Extended Diploma extends and deepens the specialist work related to Policing. There is potential for the qualification to prepare learners for appropriate direct employment into the Police Apprentice pathway. It is broadly equivalent to three A Levels. The Level 3 Extended Diploma in Policing is designed as a full time, 2-year programme for learners who wish to develop their skills and knowledge of the sector. This qualification also supports learners interested in progressing to further/higher education. 

Professional Chef – Patisserie & Confectionery

This programme is for anyone who works or wants to work as a patisserie chef in the catering and hospitality sector. The course will give you an overview of the many elements that make up being a professional pastry chef, which is a specialised and unique role within the catering & hospitality sector. If you are an experienced professional chef ready to take your cooking skills to the next level, or a student progressing from the Level 2 Practical Cookery Programme, this course will help you by providing you with an industry-standard qualification.

ATTENDANCE PATTERN: 3½ days over 5 days
You will be expected to attend on at least three evenings per year

Professional Cookery Level 2

This hands-on programme will equip you with the skills and knowledge to help you become a professional chef. It will open doors to various sectors of the food industry and provide you with many workplace essentials. Throughout this course you will gain high standard cookery skills in our state-of-the art facilities, alongside other fundamental knowledge in hygiene, health & safety, teamwork and customer care.

Professional Diploma in Performance (UAL Professional) Level 4

This course provides a bridge between education and the industry and/or specialist Higher training. You will experience professional weekly masterclasses and collaborations with the industry. The qualification has a holistic approach, encouraging experimentation and risk taking. It provides for you to test your creativity which stimulates and provides a supportive transition from general to more specialised study.

Public Relations Level 3

This course is designed to take advantage of the growing number of jobs in PR. The course relies heavily on the use of smartphone and digital technology as you develop your communication skills to generate media campaigns, press kits, and social media content. You will learn a range of skills including how to rebrand products, write press releases, shoot media campaign videos, manage public perception, develop advertising campaigns, generate original content ideas, work with clients and crisis manage situations. So, if you want to work in a job where you get to travel, and meet interesting people, work with a range of exciting clients, including household brands, political parties, production companies, and celebrities, and influence the public then this is the course for you.

Public Services Diploma

Working in the uniformed public services can be a very rewarding experience, be it on the front line of the armed forces or helping the public as a Police Community Support Officer. On this course you will learn about the skills and qualities needed to be an effective member of the services and the types of work that you would participate in. The course is mostly academic, however throughout the course you will also complete a number of practical units which will challenge and develop both your fitness and outdoor activity skills.

Salon Management Level 4 Diploma

This course has been specifically designed for existing or aspiring managers who work in a spa, beauty therapy,hairdressing or nail salon environment. The course is also for those wishing to set up or enhance their own business.

Science – Applied Science BTEC Awards Level 2

The course provides the essential core of scientific knowledge and applied skills so that you will be able to progress to a Level 3 Applied Science qualification. This in turn will enable you to progress within a wide choice of Science-based allied career pathways, apprenticeships and/or employment.

Site Carpentry Level 2

This level 2 programme will enable you to develop and hone your skills in site carpentry and will enable you to experience all aspects of the craft both on and off the job. Upon successful completion of your course you will hold all qualifications to the expected industrial standard. You will also gain the opportunity to progress onto an advanced apprenticeship in site carpentry.

Social Media Level 3

This course has been designed for anyone who wants to earn their living working in social media. Supporting Teaching & Learning in Schools – Adult Course Level 2

The Level 2 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning has been designed to provide learners with an understanding of the knowledge and skills needed when working directly with children and young people in school or college environments. It covers a wide range of areas including children and young people’s development, supporting children and young people’s positive behaviour and communication and professional relationships.It’s aimed at learners working in roles that support pupils’ learning in primary, secondary or special schools, as well as colleges.

To successfully complete this qualification, you must be employed, volunteering, or undertaking a practical placement in a real work environment (RWE) to undertake a minimum of 100 hours work experience. 

A good level of English and maths is recommended. If you wish to improve your skills in these areas, you may have the opportunity to take a Functional Skills course alongside this qualification.

The content on this course covers a broad range of engineering skills in the first year (design, mechanical, electronic, electrical, theoretical, manufacturing, quality) with specific focus in the second year electronic and electrical engineering.

Throughout the course there will be large amounts of practical work included in the relevant topics e.g. working with PLC devices or circuit design, building and manufacture. Various Engineering and Manufacturing companies will be visited in the local area and further trips to Engineering Conferences.

T Level Science - Laboratory Sciences L3

T level Science is aimed at students who are interested in pursuing a career in laboratory science. Year one includes essential knowledge and skills to work in science or healthcare including how the industry works, core scientific concepts and key regulations including managing information, health and safety and good scientific/clinical practice.

In Year 2 you will specialise in Laboratory Sciences understanding how to design and perform practical experiments, keep good records and solve problems.

Alongside your work at college you will have a extended industry placement of 315 hours (around 45 days) which enables you to gain important experience of a workplace and also develop the key skills and behaviours that employers are looking for.
