WHAT'S IT ALL ABOUT?

Due to our ageing population, nursing and care are becoming ever more necessary. Our courses prepare you for providing the specialist care that vulnerable people of all ages need. Specialist training is given for those wishing to work in care homes and in social care settings (e.g. hospices, care homes for the elderly or for people with disabilities or mental illness).

WHAT WILL I DO?

You will learn a wide range of skills including anatomy and physiology; personal and professional development; safeguarding and dementia care. Part of your course will be in College and part in the community so that you gain experience of working in a variety of health and social care settings, benefiting from practical, hands-on training. The College has strong links with MENCAP, Age UK, Streets2Homes and Princess Alexandra Hospital, allowing you to benefit from their experience.

WHAT CAN I DO NEXT?

Higher education in areas such as nursing, midwifery, social work and psychology. Career opportunities in areas such as nursing, social work, midwifery, mental health nursing, teaching and counselling. You could also undertake an Apprenticeship in a related subject.

Health & Science Level 1

COURSE NOW FULL

This is a level 1 aimed to provide an introduction to Further Education and the courses on offer. It comprises of core units that will prepare students for a level 2 qualification, pastoral units that will give students essential skills for personal development, and subject units to give an example of future courses. Other pathways include Engineering, Sport and Business.

Health & Social Care Foundation Diploma

This course provides thorough training for those wishing to work in care homes and in a social care settings (e.g. hospices, care homes for the elderly or for people with disabilities or mental illness). You will undertake part of your course in college and part in training placements in the community so that you gain experience of working in a variety of health and social care settings. This enables you to gain practical, hands on training.

Health & Social Care Level 2

This course is suitable for those who have no previous experience in health and social care but wish to pursue a career in this sector. The course is assignment based, with a minimum of 60 hours of work experience. Those who only need to do one GCSE resit will also do half a day a week volunteering, which will enhance their employability on completion of the programme.

Health & Social Care – Access to Higher Education Diploma

This course is for those who do not have the relevant experience or qualifications to progress to university. It will equip you with the skills and knowledge you need to succeed in a career in Health and Social Care. You will learn and apply the theoretical and practical knowledge required for working the Health and Care field. Many of our former students are now pursuing new careers and seeing changes in their lives they never thought possible.

What is an Access to Higher Education course? 

An Access to Higher Education course is a 1 year pre-university course that prepares adults for study at university. This course is ideal if you have been out of education for a while, planning a career change or upskill in your current job. A typical Access course is 2-3 days a week, 9.30am-3pm and are taken by students of all ages and backgrounds.

Healthcare and Nursing Assistant Practice Higher National Certificate

The course covers a range of subjects including innovation and improvement, person-centred practice, care planning processes, supporting individuals through significant life events, supporting team and partnerships, psychophysiological disorders, and health psychology. Classes are taught though face-to-face lectures and one-to-one meetings. Students will engage in group work, research projects and flip-learning.

Funding Your Course

If you're aged 19 or over and you want to study A Levels, an Access to Higher Education Diploma, or a Level 3 to 6 Vocational Qualification, you could be eligible for an Advanced Learner Loan.
