WHAT'S IT ALL ABOUT?

Media and journalism are among the most creative and dynamic industries in the world. Whether you want to work in TV, radio, film, social media, journalism, or creative writing, there are endless opportunities for travel, creative expression, and career progression. 

Students on our TV and film course are only limited by their imagination. They have access to industry-standard software, and an impressive range of cameras, tripods, dollys, mics, and lenses, as well as a TV studio that contains portable sets, a greenscreen, and lighting rig to produce a range of content. Journalism is among one of the most dynamic industries in the world. In TV, radio and print there are endless opportunities for travel and career progression. Our Journalism Centre has produced successful journalists for over 50 years, whose alumni include Piers Morgan, Richard Madeley and Sophy Ridge. The courses use industry-standard equipment and will challenge your creativity with projects and realistic workplace scenarios. Our social media courses provides students with the opportunity to work with real-life clients and develop ways to monetise their skills and creative talents. Meanwhile, our Creative Writing provides students with the opportunity to develop original content in a range of formats, including long and short form stories, children’s books, poetry, and stories written for radio, TV, and theatre.

WHAT WILL I DO?

Our courses offer a range of content, and are designed to reflect the industry. Students on our TV and Film course might find themselves doing anything from shooting and editing adverts, to music videos, or horror movies. Whilst students on our Journalism course will find themselves producing material for news and magazines, or writing and presenting journalistic content for TV and radio, or podcating. Our Social Media students will find themselves working across a range of platforms, either generating original content for a range of different clients or for themselves as they seek to develop themselves as a brand. Finally, our Creative Writing students not only write and develop stories for long and short form novels, but also produce scripts for TV and radio, write children’s stories, poetry, and theatre productions. No matter what you choose, all of our courses offer students a range of opportunities to acquire work experience and to work with real clients, whether it be developing film, TV, or social media content, writing articles and news stories, or developing plays for theatre companies to perform.

WHAT CAN I DO NEXT?

There are many opportunities for talents and creative individuals in the media, journalism, and publishing industries. Previous students have gone on to become published authors, journalists, news editors, radio and TV presenters, film and TV crew, including editors, producers, and directors, and publishing. In recent years, social media has represented one of the fastest growing industries with many students securing creative and executive positions with a range of companies. Students wishing to continue their studies have progressed onto the NCTJ, university, or apprenticeships in related subjects.

Social Media & Content Creation Level 3

The online world is changing rapidly. More businesses and individuals are turning to social media and online content as a tool for growth. If you aspire to earn a living in social media, you’ve come to the right place. On this course you will learn how to shoot, edit and distribute your own content – allowing you to explore your creativity by working within a range of genres. You will build a portfolio of work across a variety of online platforms, develop your entrepreneurial skills, and explore how you can monetise your content. Whether you aspire to become a social media influencer, or managing PR and social media accounts for celebrities/businesses, this course is designed for you.

Creative Writing Level 3

This course has been designed to nurture budding authors, to build their confidence and develop their writing skills, to expose them to a range of different genre and writing medium, help them to hone their craft, and most importantly, build their confidence.

In year one you will concentrate on developing a creative writing portfolio and setting up a website to promote your work. You will experience writing material for a range of different audiences and developing original content for a number of different mediums. These may include poetry; writing for children, the stage and radio. You will discover how to record sound effects and incorporate them into your scripts as well as .looking at lighting and stage design. Some of your work could be published in our online magazine Spotlight, giving you a chance to get your work read by a wider audience. In the second year you will work on a project for television which will include not only the script but promotional material including a short, filmed trailer. You will also investigate job opportunities, and perfect CVs and UCAS applications, should you decide to go to university. Throughout the course you will develop your research and presentation skills and conduct a major project of your own choosing which will form part of an exhibition at the end of each year.

Journalism Level 3

This is the first step in your career in one of the most exciting careers available. Led by a team of former journalists, this programme is designed to introduce learners to the fast-paced environment of print, broadcast and online journalism. You will learn how to improve your writing style, how to conduct interviews, what job roles are available, and how to improve your chances of getting your first foot in the door of this very competitive industry.

Multimedia Level 1

The qualification has been designed for those who have an interest in the media and are looking to explore and extend their interest via a full-time, immersive learning experience. The course covers a range of disciplines from film and television, social media, marketing, and photography, among others. Many students have identified a specific career in the creative industries that they wish to progress to using this qualification as a starting point.

Multimedia Level 2

The qualification has been designed for those who have an interest in the media and are looking to explore and extend their interest via a full-time, immersive learning experience. The course covers a range of disciplines from film and television, journalism, social media, PR and marketing, photography, and creative writing, among others. Many students have identified a specific career in the creative industries that they wish to progress to using this qualification as a starting point.

TV, Film and Digital Media Level 3

The qualification has been designed for those who have an interest in media and who wish to explore and extend this interest via a full-time, immersive learning experience. Many students join this course because they have identified a specific career that they want to achieve (e.g. producer, director, cinematographer, broadcast technician, editor etc). If that sounds familiar, then this is the qualification for you. This is a practical course that combines elements of film, TV, and digital media. Whilst on this course you will develop the skills you need to start a career in the industry by completing practical projects that are based on realistic workplace situations, activities and demands.
