Engineering & Manufacturing

WHAT'S IT ALL ABOUT?

Qualified and highly skilled technicians are increasingly in demand in this exciting and rewarding industry. Our Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering Centre (HAMEC) opened in March 2017, and is focused on the key engineering areas of advanced manufacturing engineering. If you’re looking for real-life experience and the opportunity to progress to work or further study then join the Engineering team.

WHAT WILL I DO?

Students can train for the advanced manufacturing sector. You will learn how things work and how to keep them working, using diagnostics and fault finding procedures, giving you a broad understanding of the huge possibilities within the engineering industry. Our strong links with employers such as BTL Precision, Gratnells and London Stansted Airport means students will benefit from their vast experience.

WHAT CAN I DO NEXT?

You can either progress onto further or higher education or apply for an Apprenticeship in the advanced manufacturing or industry. HAMEC offers a Higher Apprenticeship in Engineering and a Higher National Certificate/Diploma, both based at our Harlow campus.

Aeronautical Engineering Extended Diploma

Talented engineers, technicians and managers are vital to the future success of the engineering and aeronautical industries. This course will give you a solid knowledge base as well as supporting you to develop essential hand skills that will enable you to progress into roles such as an aircraft maintenance technician or aircraft fitter. You could also progress to an apprenticeship or onto a higher level of study.

Engineering (General)

This course provides you with a theoretical grounding in engineering and will give you a broad understanding of the huge possibilities within the engineering industry. It allows you to move on to higher education or to an advanced apprenticeship where you can further specialise.

Engineering Apprenticeship

If you're keen to earn while you learn an apprenticeship is for you. The apprenticeship in Engineering is designed to meet the skills needs of employers. Apprenticeships are offered at Advanced and Higher level. Each level is designed to enable you to gain technical knowledge and real practical experience, along with functional and interpersonal skills. You'll learn these through a mix of learning in the workplace, formal off the job training and the opportunity to practice and embed new skills in a real work situation. As an apprentice at Harlow College you could be earning £12,156 to £18,000 a year.

Engineering Higher National Certificate & Diploma

This course provides an extensive knowledge and skills in engineering with specialist units available in Advanced Manufacturing and Automated Systems. You will be studying in the new (£11m) state-of-the-art Harlow Advanced Manufacturing Centre (HAMEC) equipped with over £2m worth of industry standard machinery and equipment. There is a huge demand for qualified engineers locally, nationally and internationally. We work closely with industry to ensure our courses meet the requirements of employers.

Engineering Technician Apprenticeship

Talented engineers, technicians and managers are vital to the future success of the engineering industry. Maintenance Technicians ensure that plant and equipment perform to the required standard to facilitate production targets regarding Safety, Quality, Delivery and Cost within High Value Manufacturing environments. Typically the work would cover a broad range of activities include installation, testing, fault finding and the on-going planned maintenance of complex automated equipment. This requires the application of a complex blend of skills, knowledge and occupational behaviours across the electrical, electronic, mechanical, fluid power and control systems disciplines.

You’ll learn advanced skills and complete a Level 4 NVQ in engineering leadership. You’ll also take a relevant Higher National Certificate, Higher National Diploma, or Foundation Degree, which could lead to progression to an honours degree in engineering technology. You’ll also learn how to write reports, use IT and work effectively in a team.

Motor Vehicle Level 1

This course is suitable for anyone interested in working in the vehicle repair/maintenance industry. It is designed to maximise opportunities for progression onto an apprenticeship programme where you can work towards becoming a fully qualified Motor Vehicle specialist.

Motor Vehicle Level 2

This qualification will give you a good foundation of knowledge on the motor vehicle and its sub-systems. The practical assignments will allow you to practise and experience the maintenance activities associated with the service of light vehicles.

Motor Vehicle Level 3

This course is designed to engage and motivate students who are interested in learning about the maintenance of motor vehicles and the various roles that are available in the retail motor industry.

Pre-Apprenticeship in Engineering (Machining)

Talented engineers, technicians and managers are vital to the future success of the engineering and advanced manufacturing sectors – and the opportunities are huge. This course will give you a solid foundation in the hands-on skills that employers say are vital to keep these industries running successfully - skills that you will have for life!
