WHAT'S IT ALL ABOUT?

Journalism is among one of the fastest growing industries in the world. In TV, radio and print there are endless opportunities for career progression. Our Journalism Centre has produced successful journalists for over 50 years, whose alumni include Piers Morgan, Richard Madeley and Sophy Ridge. The courses use industry-standard equipment and will challenge your creativity with projects and realistic workplace scenarios.

WHAT WILL I DO?

You will study a range of journalism related subjects, including print and online, magazine and website design, social media, TV, radio, journalism and public relations. Our NCTJ course is considered by journalism professionals to be the ‘gold standard’ qualification. Students on the NCTJ course work, in addition to their college days, one day a week in professional settings such as newspapers, magazines and broadcast companies.

WHAT CAN I DO NEXT?

There are many opportunities for talented and creative individuals within the media and journalism industry. Previous students have gone on to become journalists, news editors, radio and TV presenters, researchers, TV producers, TV directors in the areas of sport, news, fashion and many more. You could also progress to university or onto an Apprenticeship in a related subject.

Creative Media Production – Journalism

This is the first step in your career in one of the most exciting careers available. Led by a team of former journalists, this programme is designed to introduce learners to the fast-paced environment of print, broadcast and online journalism. You will learn how to improve your writing style, how to conduct interviews, what job roles are available, and how to improve your chances of getting your first foot in the door of this very competitive industry.

Creative Media Production – Sports Journalism

Learn how to create, shoot, and edit your own video and audio content, write articles and reports for print, TV and radio and explore what can be achieved using a variety of different mediums.

Your projects will coincide with many of the key events in the sporting calendar and you will be expected to research and produce content on a range of different sports on a variety of levels. 

Each year students will complete a final major project. This project will be chosen by you and you will enjoy a large amount of freedom to create a project that you are passionate about. The grade you receive for this project will determine the final grade for your qualification. 

Classes are taught though face-to-face in a classroom setting in one of our PC or Mac suites. You will have access to TV and video editing equipment, cameras, social media hardware, the greenscreen studio and radio suite. You will receive 1-2-1 tutorials to help nurture and develop your work. The projects will consist of a mix of independent and group work.

Creative Writing Level 3

This course has been designed to nurture budding authors, to build their confidence and develop their writing skills, to expose them to a range of different genre and writing medium, help them to hone their craft, and most importantly, build their confidence. In year 1 you will concentrate on creative projects, writing material for a range of different audiences, and developing original content for a number of different mediums, including film, TV, radio, and stage. In the second year the focus switches towards factual writing, examples that you might like to explore might include travel, reference, history, or biographical, to name a few. 

Introduction to Photography

Have you ever wondered about how to make the best of your camera? Want to learn about the world of digital photography? This course is for you. Join us for 3 engaging evening sessions that will transform your digital camera from perplexing device into your creative tool of choice. In week 1 you’ll master the fundamentals of your digital camera. You can bring your own digital camera along or borrow one of our DSLR cameras. In week 2 you’ll discover the art of enhancing and refining your images and in week 3 you will build on what you learned to take your photoshop skills to a new level.  Beyond just learning, our course fosters a friendly environment, offering opportunities to make new friends who share your passion.

Multimedia Level 2

The qualification has been designed for those who have an interest in the media and are looking to explore and extend their interest via a full-time, immersive learning experience. The course covers a range of disciplines from film and television, journalism, social media, PR and marketing, photography, and creative writing, among others. Many students have identified a specific career in the creative industries that they wish to progress to using this qualification as a starting point.

Public Relations Level 3

This course is designed to take advantage of the growing number of jobs in PR. The course relies heavily on the use of smartphone and digital technology as you develop your communication skills to generate media campaigns, press kits, and social media content. You will learn a range of skills including how to rebrand products, write press releases, shoot media campaign videos, manage public perception, develop advertising campaigns, generate original content ideas, work with clients and crisis manage situations. So, if you want to work in a job where you get to travel, and meet interesting people, work with a range of exciting clients, including household brands, political parties, production companies, and celebrities, and influence the public then this is the course for you.

Social Media Level 3

This course has been designed for anyone who wants to earn their living working in social media. Whilst on this course you will learn how to shoot, edit and package your own content, explore your creativity working within a range of genre, build a portfolio of content across a variety of platforms, develop your entrepreneurial skills, and explore the ways in which you can monetise your content. So, whether you want to develop your own profile as an original content producer, become a social media influencer, or work in PR and marketing managing social media accounts for celebrities or household companies, then this is the course for you.

Funding Your Course

If you're aged 19 or over and you want to study A Levels, an Access to Higher Education Diploma, or a Level 3 to 6 Vocational Qualification, you could be eligible for an Advanced Learner Loan.
